Selenium and Firefox 3

When we started the automation project some months ago the released version of selenium was 1.0-beta-1. That version was stable enough for us to work; and it allowed us to automate all the smoke test.

The only major bug that we found in that version was that the remote control library can't launch firefox 3. If you try to execute your tests using version 3 of the browser and version 1.0-beta-1 of selenium you'll get an exception with a message like this:

java.lang.RuntimeException: Firefox refused shutdown while preparing a profile

That was a known issue and the people of Selenium was already trying to fix it. So we decided to continue the automation despite of that limitation: tests will have to be run in Firefox 2 until the release of a new selenium version.

Two months ago that version was released. Selenium 1.0-beta-2 can launch Firefox 3 without problems. However, we wanted to finish coding the smoke test as soon as possible so we delayed the update of the library until the code was published.

Now that we are really close to finish the first fase of automation we can work in this issue again. We will first update the library in main branch. After some tests the change will be applied to the other two branches and bugs 8337 and 8338 will be closed.

While those issues are still open, if you want to run the automation suite using firefox you will have to install firefox 2 and configure its path in OpenbravoERPTest.properties file.

Today we started working on this. We will let you know when the new selenium version is working on all of our branches.
